How to Monitor Routers, Switches, and Network Devices for Free

Setting Up Free Network Monitoring
Step 1: Identify your critical devices

Common Pitfalls

Some security policies block ICMP. If a device doesn't respond to ping, check its firewall rules before assuming it's down. For devices that must block ICMP, use TCP checks on a known open port instead.
Monitoring private IPs from the cloud

- TCP checks on management ports (SSH on 22, SNMP on 161)
